I'm back to work (for 2 days - this is my short week) so him working seems appropriate...

I guess this looks like a Hurricane quilt, right?
We were spared the worst of it. Did not even lose electricity.
You know why? Because I made a pot of chili. If I had not been so prepared then we would have been scrambling in the dark to find something to eat.

Does anyone remember my version? It's nice to go to a quilt show/flickr/pinterest & say, "I've done that" instead of "I want to do that."
(This one combines Japanese Taupes with CW reproductions. Mine used only Taupes. The pattern was in a magazine many many years ago.)
P.S. It is true, you can kill a lot of time on Pinterest!

Love how colorful this is & I have been a fan of the "pattern" for a while...
Today I am going to make Cincy Chili - they are forecasting a bad storm, since we have a gas stove, this can be heated if we loose electricity.
Tonight I am going to a 40th Birthday Party - by myself! :o) (We won't mention that her quilt has been a UFO for far too long...)

At hime on a Wednesday in Pajamas... What can be going on?, a photo by aviva_hadas on Flickr.
Strep Throat - another first. Luckily he is taking his medicine without fighting & his mood is fairly jovial.
I probably feel worse than him - still. (I tend to feel better by the afternoon, but the overnight is wretched.)

I still feel cruddy - I was fine yesterday afternoon, but I was literally up all night coughing & tossing & turning. I got my first wink of shut eye at about 5:00.
With that said, I was fine to "help" with homework.

quilt made by one of my friends. Lots of different types of fmq-ing., a photo by aviva_hadas on Flickr.
I feel rotten, so this is going to be a post & go posting...

Old photo - I know.
I ended up sorting into two piles - oldies & newbies + kitties/novelties.
The cake came out - just need to photograph it & copy the recipe down...
Quilt show tomorrow.
Sew-n-Tell (my mini-group) on Sunday!

& I haven't quite started to sort my scraps yet...
There is a local quilt show this weekend - hopefully I will be inspired to take a few photos & then I can download them & the ones that are on my camera now...
I also plan on makeing an "All in 1 holiday" bundt cake tomorrow. With any luck I will post the recipe with a photograph then.

Assuming that all of these were just 2.5 inch squares (& a rainbow rather than neutral - the question is based on value) would you sort & piece them thusly?
I love the novelties here & there & the fact that they are of higher contrast that the prints that surround them, makes them pop...
But I keep thinking that the sorting would be agonizing. Taken from the lady who's only goal was to sort her scraps into 4 piles, cats, novelties, oldies & newbies.
Pickled radishes - fail. & I eat my salads with just vinegar & oil... I think maybe the honey gave an odd flavor profile & maybe I should have used the rice wine vinegar or even apple cider vinegar - without even thinking about the lack of salt in my brine...

Is this usually 2 colors or 3? Are the "rings" ever say "red" to go with the blue & white as shown here?
Also anyone out there a pickler? (The refrigerator kind.)
I forgot to add salt to my brine for pickled radishes last night (My helper was enthralled with the honey & "what is vinegar?") will they turn out?

Someone is almost 4!
We are having his party early there is just too much going on with everyone to try to have a Thanksgiving party. He had previously been invited to a birthday at this location (& others) so when he wanted balloons, we choose this one. (You see that he loved the car - all of the kids did. He also liked the bounce houses - especially once momma joined in on the fun aka showed him how to do it.)
Yesterday at the Fire Station open house they had a bounce house - guess who decided not to go in it... But last week he did bounce at the pumpkin patch... So by the time the party rolls around it will be anyones guess as to how much participation there will be from the birthday boy.

gray (Probably not the FMF now that I see it here.) backgrounds with a lot of Kona Ash, a photo by aviva_hadas on Flickr.
Please tell me that I am not the only one.
I have plans for the scraps & want to work with them before the primary project!
Seriously, I am so ready to cut 2.5 inch squares for my "scrap" quilts...
Meanwhile, I am about to start sorting my already cut scraps into cats, novelties, oldies, & newbies. :o)

I finished trimming the smaller cat scraps this afternoon & added them to the 2.5 inch squares bin.
I did not make it to the zoo - I over did it on a walk & shopping trip with my girlfriend yesterday... Seriously when you are walking out to an undetermined turn around point, how do you not over due it - you have to get back to the starting point... (& Aside from the blister, I didn't feel that bad on the trail...)

This guy/gal lives at the National Zoo. I don't remember what kind of bird it is, but I know it is not an Emu, because that was my guess. As of right now, we plan on going to the zoo again tomorrow - so maybe I will be able to identify it then. Depends on where we park & what my benevolent dictator wants to see. Since it is a free zoo, we don't feel the need to see everything when we go.

Since we live close enough & the price is right... (We are members - free parking with paid membership)
We go to the zoo often enough & we can go just to see the panda without guilt, tears, frustration, etc.
& Jacob's favorite "food" is a picnic - so we pack one of those too.

He was siging "Itsy Bitsy Spider" too darn cute for words I tell ya! Too cute! This climbing toy was a big hit, he played on it twice & then still did not want to get off when it was time to leave.
I trimmed all of my Y2K charms yesterday & started to trim more small cat scraps. (Small under 5 inches square - roughly. Scraps - less that a fat quarter, but when you are dealing with 2.5 inch squares less than a fat quarter can be "too big.")
Monday, October 08, 2012
So I spent my holiday baking a pumpkin cake that turned out pretty bad (Rhonda this is your warning) but I am sure that my almost 4 year old will eat it anyway.
& cutting scraps. Not just any scraps mind you, but my Y2K (Raise your hand if you were quilting back then.) scraps. It just occurred to me that this albatross has been over my head for 13 years.
I was thinking that I would use them in my scrap vomit quilt, but there are so many Y2K (2000 +/-) pieces & I have so many other scraps - kitty scraps out the wazoo! That I might just make a postage stamp quilt using the golden oldies.
Back to the scrap vomit idea - since I have so many kitty scraps (already cut & un-cut larger scraps) that my scrap vomit quilt would be the hair ball version!

Is it technically fall yet?
Every year we go to Butler's Orchard for their fall festival. The weather started out "iffy" yesterday but the skies cleared & we had a fun time.
What do you do to usher in fall?
(I'm about to look for a pumpkin cookie or cake recipe - that might be a fun thing to do with my little boy today.)

These would be the cats from yesterdays post. The print cam in several color variations & had some full sized cats, etc.
I spent a good portion of the summer culling my fabric & some of those went on to have a better life in a quilt rather than a stash. This I pulled from my scrap bin - everything under a fq - especially if I have cut the 10.5 inch square for my scrappy backs.
(I knew I kept some - I thought I kept the full half yard that I purchased. Which made my search for the print comical.)
Thursday, October 04, 2012
I have that cat print & plan to fussy cut it thusly & use it just like this... I'll need to remember to use my other novelties sparingly so that the kitties shine. I can do that with just a postage stamp quilt - how many kitties would be too many?
Wednesday, October 03, 2012
This one is for Small World that I also shared in the last couple weeks.
I made this back before (between) my 10.5 inch square decision.
(I was going to say revelation, but I know that Bonnie Hunter has been using 10.5 inch square for years.)
I actually think that I was:
1. being lazy - why cut & then sew - just sew them together.
2. most of these are not 10.5 inches wide...
They all appear light, but when shuffled about the rest of the taupes, they are more medium light & actually kind of hard to use - at least that is what i was saying to myself as I made the "use these on the back to use them up" pile.

Back - more & more of my backs will be squares like this. I have been culling my fabric hoard & keeping a 10.5 inch strip for scraps & scrappy backs., a photo by aviva_hadas on Flickr.
This is the back to the stretched stars (Number the Stars) quilt that I showed in the last couple of weeks. More & more of my backs will be squares like this. I have been culling my fabric hoard & keeping a 10.5 inch strip for scraps & scrappy backs.
Scraps - yes, I am actively embracing quilting with scraps. (I still have some yardage, but...)
So I would like to pose a question on Blogtober 2nd...
What quilt/blocks can you make with 2.5 inch squares. (trimming some of them down is fine.)
I'll go first - sorry if you don't know what I mean by what I call it - if that is the case, let me know & I'll try to blog a photo of it.
1. Granny Square
2. Postage stamp
3. Scrap Vomit (Steps to the Altar)
4. 4-patch or 9-patch (& if you have enough 16-patch, etc.)
5. half square triangles - wonky & true
6. Stars - wonky & true
7. use them as sashing or border elements
8. use them pieced together as "pick up sticks" insterts (Slash & instert)
Now I need to make a flickr gallery showing some of these ideas to remind me.

I almost let it slip by...
I'm going to try to blog everyday this month.
My theme will probably be a lot of restrospective, mish-mash, favorite pictures kind of deal... With a bit of whats going on now thrown in for good measure.
My great grandmother made this quilt & that little boy cat is no longer with us.
