"Number the Stars"

"Number the Stars" by aviva_hadas
"Number the Stars", a photo by aviva_hadas on Flickr.

This one has been done for 3 to 4 months by now...

Genesis 15:5 And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'

That is the basis for the title because as you can obviously see are the star blocks, but what you may not realize is that there are many star fabrics & the quilting is a star design as well. (There is a star print on the scrappy back & the quilting shows on the back as well.) So while there is a finite number of stars on this quilt, the number is not easily or quickly determined...

To make this I sorted all of my Japanese Taupes into lights, medium lights, mediums, medium darks, & darks. The lights and medium lights are the star points & were cut 2.5 inches square, the medium darks & darks were cut 5 inches square. They were pieced together randomly only once I had larger (16 patch?) units did I start to try to place them more deliberately.

While doing the Value exercise of sorting, I pulled some that were harder to use & they became the scrappy back on the quilt that I showed yesterday.

The scrappy back on this one is all squares from the Woven Taupes - that was going to be a top, but I forced too many light prints & "ruined" the effect that I was going for - so it became a back.
