I read this somewhere & all I can say is wow.

"Only about 1-2% of the readers of any given post will comment. In other words, 98-99% of readers simply don't leave comments."

& I am going to do my best to be part of the 1-2%...

So I sewed

(YAY - I met my goal.) I am now sewing during nap time or as was the case yesterday when the boys went out. Yes, it was cold, but they rode the bus to the mall & walked home. Tiny fingers refused to wear gloves... But we all had chicken soup for lunch. (Then he took a nap, so I had 2 blocks of time.)

While they were out & I was sewing, I had a snoopervisor:
Big helper aka snoopervisor.

& she slept on the job:
She slept

FYI My snoopervisor hates scissors:

most of my rows. (This is now a top.)

most of my rows. (This is now a top.)
Originally uploaded by aviva_hadas

This was shot before I had all of my rows sewn together. I was trying to figure out why most of them were 6 rows & then there was a row of 4. The first row I sewed together had 8. Uh oh.

Also most of the centers are 9 inches square, but this quilt grew as the number of novelties increased, so there is a row of 8 inch squares - I made the gray "sashing" a little wider to compensate...

There are some wobbly bits, but it is a rather square top. & that is a good thing. (The end result is 6 x 7 - you can only see about 5 x 6 in this photo, oh yeah, there was the row of 8 off to the side & the row of 4 when I was trying to find the missing two blocks...)

Now to put a border on Jacob's ABC quilt.

The "block"

The "block"
Originally uploaded by aviva_hadas

This photo was taken in March. I am not 100% sure why it too so long for me to finish the blocks, but as of yesterday, all 42 blocks are done. My goal is to have a quilt top done this weekend.

I guess part of the reason is that this quilt kept growing. I started out with X & they got hold of several more & then several more - added to the few that I had in my stash previously. All of the solids are different.

Merry Christmas to those who celebrate.

up & down

up & down
Originally uploaded by aviva_hadas

At the beginning of our cruise, Jacob was terrified of the open elevators. Somewhere in the middle he fell in love with them. One day while daddy was waiting in the guest services line, Mommy & Jacob rode "Up & Down" over & over. & Every time we walked within eye shot of the elevators, Jacob would exclaim, "Up & Down."

(This photo also shows evidence of his first experience with face painting.)

(In this photo, the bottom right corner of the quilt was my "goal." Oh well, it still works & I still used that fabric.)

I am going to have a bulls eye quilted onto each square.

I will back it with a rainbow colored cat flannel (I have a full bolt.) I am considering a multi/rainbow print for the binding - but I am also thinking black for the binding.

I know how I want it quilted. Each "J" image/square will have a "J" quilted on it. Etc.

I've looked & looked & have not found any uh-oh's, but every time I see that 30's print that has bicycles & jump ropes - I see the bicycles first & think that it is an uh-oh.

Meanwhile, when I left you this morning, I mentioned something about sewing. Several hours (a break for breakfast at the crepe place & a nice nap) later & the J-A-C-O-B quilt is a top! & a very big top while we are at it! My estimate 80x100 - maybe even 90 x 110. (I was aiming for twin...)

I also pieced the worlds most expensive quilt top together as well. (& I am a bit "meh" about it. The mediums are awfully light & I wanted a dark quilt...)

Photos tomorrow, I hope. (I am bringing them both to sew-n-tell to press the long seams.)

Also I baked a pumpkin cranberry bread for sew-n-tell.

(There are more photos in flickr where I have a bird feeding & I am taking a picture myself. & There are some where the bird is feeding, I am taking the picture myself & I am trying to get Jacob to look at me feeding the bird while taking a picture myself.)

The bird man was rather unimpressed. (The brown pelicans that he saw the day before & the crows that we saw yesterday, now that is another story.)

It is 5:18 a.m. & all is quiet, so I am going to go sew now. :o)

I know I shared this yesterday, but I need an exercise in, "How many words/images can you find? If you see anything else, please chime in.
I'll start with the ones that made me use them in this quilt.
Top row: Jack-o-lantern, Atlantic Ocean, cherries, Ohio, book
alternates for the Jack-o-lantern piece: pumpkin, witch, tombstone, cat, outline, vine, carving
alternates for the Atlantic ocean: Just on how this fabric is cut, part of Africa & Madascar are showing, but you can also see Alaska/Bearing Sea - so you can also see part of Russia
I can only add stems & red to the cherries piece
Alternates for Ohio: football, airplane, Lake Erie, Lansing, Michigan
Alternates for book: "L"ittle & all of those characters...

Now for the all cat row (You knew I had to do one of those, right?)
Cat with Jonquil, Cat with Apples, Cat with Chopsticks, Cat in Outerspace, Cat in the Bath.
Alternates, daffodil, daisy, sushi, Japanese, eating, UFO, spaceship, planets, tub, towel, rubber ducky, brush

Japan, Avocado, Cars, Owl, Boy
Alternates: Geisha, kimono, (Does that cart have a name? the gate?), pit, skin, flesh, specific types of cars: truck, jeep, smart, RV, Police, cactus, desert, saguaro, prickly pear, mountain, child/children

Jacks, Airplanes, Camera, Otter, Blueberries
Alternates: tic-tac-toe, checkers/chess, cards, bingo, scrabble, pick-up sticks, pencil, die

(I wish I had found more than a fq of this one... No I don't, I am using & culling! Which reminds me, if you see something that you could use or just want shout, if I have it, I can share.)

back to the list of alternates: types of airplanes: Pace, Standard, Rocket, Stinger, Plane instead of "airplane"
Tiger, jungle, safari, danger, (The image came from a zoo panel, so zoo in a pinch.) tree, pond (also in a pinch.)

I guess the otter is in pond, or lake, or stream, water
Ican't add much to the blueberries.

last row: Jalapeno hot sauce (I know because it says so on the label.) Arithmetic/Apple/A, crown, Octopus/O, Boombox

Alternates: hot sauce, jars, "1", "Uno", "Hot", "Flame", "Gecko", flames, sauce, flip-top bottle, book, ink, jump rope (Hey that cat print is a goody - I & J - whoo hoo!) mouse, bow, "C", "A", "T", "S", paper, chalk, easel, gems, pearls (I can't describe the crown any further...)
O & Octopus covers the next one, unless you get into the suckers on the arms, or point out the eight arms.
Which leave us with boombox and cassette tapes. The boombox has an antenna, speakers, cassette deck, radio, dials, nobs & buttons. As a final stretch, the cassette tape has a label.

That was fun. I partially did this to help a friend who is new to the I SPY game and has a hard time seeing the trees for the forest...

Also I'd like to thank those of you who swapped with me or gifted to me charms to help make this quilt possible. I remember purchasing 18 of the 25 on this block, but many are from gifts & swaps. better than that, I know that several of these are no longer in my stash!

My inspiration

I spy quilt
Originally uploaded by kate @ swim, bike, quilt!

Yes, I got permission to share this photo on my blog. This is my inspiration for the red, orange, yellow, green, blue & purple sashing.

(I can't look too closely at this quilt otherwise I start wanting "X" image, like those diaper/safety pins!)

Feel free to ask any questions about the following blocks. I SPY's are my favorite & I can gush over each & every bit.

I have been sewing on the JACOB quilt! I have written some anecdotes on each block/blog post, so without further introduction.

I am peeved that evertime I see that 30's bicycle print, I have to remind myslef that it also show Jump ropes as in J is for Jump ropes.

Outerspace, boy does that seem like a stretch - there you have it with the O's. which is why I love the Orchestra & Opera house prints in this block.

My long stretch on this block & perhaps the longest in the whole quilt - "Opie" the cat... Hey, there could be all C is for cats easily in this quilt! As it is in this block alone, you see a chef, Chevy cars, Coconuts, cupcakes & a cowboy!

(I am pretty sure that apples show up 3 times & Arithmetic twice.) At least that cat image in the bottom row shows arithmetic & an apple - heck it even has an "A."

Favorite in this block: boombox. (I'll have to explain that one in the future, I am sure.)
