red cat quilt

This is an oldie but a goodie for me. I made this when I was in a quilt guild. Guilds hire teachers - both local & nationally known ones. I took a class with Margaret Miller & made the background. Which I was rather happy with, but....

The sitting cat I made on my own & it was appliqued onto a light blue background waiting to be quilted. The pattern is by Sharon Malec.

Our guild hired Sharon to teach a class. I did the lying down kitty in that class. (I also did a brown lying down kitty - that one is still a UFO.)

I am not sure how or when it happened, but I had a spark & decided to combine the two (actually 3) UFO's together to make 1 quilt.

I had it long armed with an all over feather design in the background & the kitties are McTavished. It hangs on the hall wall near my entry & there is a recessed light right center above it, so when the lights are out in the living room & dim in the hall, It is lit nicely.

My girl cat, Rhapsody, is colored very similarly to the sitting kitty - but the face is all wrong. (I have been told that the quilted cat has a dog face.) The lying down kitty is sort of colored like my boy cat, RB, only RB is more solid... Artistic license, right?

I hope you all enjoy the Blogger's Quilt Festival.

P.S. I have a prize for one lucky commentor. (International Quilter's welcome.)

Oh, what fun.......see that's what I've discovered lately,.......joining elements of more than one quilt together.....you get such nice surprises (and totally original, too !)

Now what is "McTavished" ? I couldn't tell from the photo.

I once made a quilt that looked JUST LIKE my kitty.....then he was run over a few days later. I felt kindof superstitious about that and never copied a pet again. Glad to see your version with "artistic license".

Love the idea of pulling parts together to make his whole. The background is great, but needed something and the cats were a great addition.

Great composition! The shades of all the colors make it so interesting. I think your sitting cat looks more than a little Siamese. Thanks for sharing this kitty quilt's story :)

Wonderful, wonderful quilt! I enlarged it (I had to see if the cat's face looked like a dog's-it does not in my opinion :) and I got a better look at the red squares! What a wonderful surprise!

I can just imagine it lit up...what do the cats think? Do they meow at their fabric buddies?

I've always loved cats and have 2 that are my "furry children" now that my human children are grown.

Very inspired!

Of course, I love your cat quilt. I hadn't seen this one before. I like the way you solved the UFO problem, too.

All about artistic license. Besides, one of my boy kitties has the nickname "Puppy Face" for a reason!

What a great quilt and kudos on making such a winner out of ufos and in a workshop to boot.
You should send photos to both teachers as I think they'd be impressed/pleased.

Beautiful cats! I love your combo of the pieced background with Sharon's cats. I'm a fan of her dogs, but I especially like your pairing here.
