That is how many comments (as of when I last checked) the Pioneer Woman got the other day when she was giving away a Kitchen Aide Mixer. I have a Kitchen Aide stand mixer that is not as new & shiny, but it does the job well. & I am so happy that my husband let me get it when we were getting wedding/new house hold stuff. I wish I used it more, but I don't have the counter space to leave it out & it is heavy/sturdy! & the cabinet that it is in is not easy to get into. I even have 2 sets of verything for it so that I can make dairy and non-dairy confections - one set can take butter & milk the other can not.

This post is about comments, because Kitchen Aide has not plied my with a mixer to give away, sorry. For the few of you who read me, you would have had great odds in winning that one.

Do you reply to every comment? I think that I reply to a rather large proportion (not hard when you never get more than 10 comments a day) but I know that for one reason or another, I do not get to all of them every day. I do appreciate them all. Because while I yammer on for the yammering on of it, I do like to know that you are reading... (I can not promise that I will ever learn to type, so I am sorry about the typos - in my head what I type is perfect, so I am not the best proofreader - just ask my boss. He is a very good proofreader.)

Do you read the comments that other people leave? My husband claims that the comments are the best parts. I can probably count on 2 hands the number of times that I have read comments left by other people on someone elses blog. I can definately count on 1 hand the number of times that I have gone back to see if a reply to me is in the comments. My brain just does not work that way. Also when I reply to a comment or when my comment is replied to, it often segues into a new conversation, so I am not 100% sure that commenting in comments works for that...

Also there are quite a few blogs that I read but do not comment on. (Some of those are the ones where I "assume" that the author will not reply - based on volume or past experience.) Does anyone else lurk on some & comment on others? Do you have a rationale? I am totally curious about this side of blogging.

Our friend Blogger seems to have hiccoughed (I have no idea how to spell that, but you know what I mean.) & some people who previously showed their e-mail address with their comments now have them shut off. I too fell victim to this ailment. Libby let me know & I fixed it for myself. Not that I can quite explain how to do it so that you can do a self exam & fix yourself.

Happy Blogtober 7th!

I reply to every comment via email. I don't go back and see if there is a comment left for me either. I have enough trouble getting through all the blogs on my list without going back twice.

I also have to confess to lurking on big/super blogs or blogs where the skill(or cool factor) of the blogger intimidates me. :)

I try to reply to most comments but I don't reply to every single comment. There are lots of blogs where I never comment but most of those are political, humor, climate, cooking or other non-fiber blogs and I almost never read other people's comments.

I don't comment on some blogs like Pioneer. What's the point really? I feel since we had a little connection through the Quilts of Valor that you're part of my bloggy family. Hard to believe but I'm very shy about leaving comments on some blogs. I sort of figure they are so much more artistic, talented, whatever, than me so who am I to comment. Silly, I know, but that's how I see it. Conversely, If someone comments on my blog and they are new(no commenters yet) I like to say a few words of encouragement. It's tough to keep writing without making a connection. Sorry for the novel.

Sometimes I lurk, sometimes I comment. All depends on the subject and if I have something relatively intelligent to say. I do reply to all of the comments left on my blog unless I miss one. I hate to be rude! I rarely read comments on other folks blogs unless it is subject matter that intrigues me.

Hey! Cool post. "Do you reply to every comment?" - No, I don't. I have a good guilt trip about it though. I'm workin' to overcome that. "Do you read the comments that other people leave?" No. Not unless I'm waiting for someone to drive up in the driveway. "Does anyone else lurk on some & comment on others? Do you have a rationale?" Yes. I have a folder for "watching" new to me blogs. I watch to see if they're "for me" before I add them to the behemoth feed list. That's my lurker folder.

I try to reply to every comment left on my blog. Sometimes I read the other comments, depends on how many there are and if the topic is extremely interesting.

PS - I have several of your entries marked for comment. You don't need to reply to every comment though.

I'm a big-time lurker on a lot of blogs, but I comment on a few...or email the person.
PW doesn't reply to comments or emails, so I don't know why she gets the response that she does. I'm sure if you have sponsorship like she did, you'd give them all away too.
I'm lucky enough to have a big red Kitchenaid mixer that I can leave out.

Do I reply to all comments left on my blog - no (but I absolutely read each and every one and appreciate that other bloggers took the time to share their reaction or thoughts or advice ... my response, or lack is thereof, is time and/or situation driven)

Do I lurk - heavens, yes.

Do I read other comments on blogs I visit? It totally depends on the topic and the position of the planets.

Do I comment on mega blogs - never. I read those for entertainment only, not because of interaction with the author.

Why do I comment? Because I choose to, because the topic touches me, because I have developed a relationshiop with that blogger, because I have something worthwhile to say. There's too much blah-blah-blah to comment without content.

Do I reply to every comment? I try to do so. Lately it has been a lot of hassle because of the noreply-comment issue.

Do I read the comments left by other people Absolutely. I love to read other's opinions and tips. Sometimes I follow links to some wonderful places.

Lurking Yes, I do that too. There are times I just don't feel like 'talking' but I am interested in what is going on.

sadly i don't reply to every comment. if the email comes through with the comment there is a greater chance taht i'll reply though. if i have to go back to the person's blog and try to find their email I'll only do it if (1) they asked a question or (2) i really want/need to reply to what they've said. if it's just positive encouragement i know i should write back to say "thanks for the comment", but i don't always find the time to do that.
I usually don't read the comments other people leave, unless the post was full of questions or asked for suggestions/recipes (i.e. this post). i used to read comments and click over to other people's blogs back when i was still looking for new quilty blogs to read. now i don't have time to keep up with the 122 feeds on my bloglines, let alone find new people..
of course i lurk on some and comment on others! sometimes i just want to see what people are making. if they don't making anything comment worthy for a while then i probably won't comment. Sadly, i often don't comment even when i really do have something to say. if i were going to take the time to do anything, i wish i could comment more consistently on blogs i truly love.

btw, i love these kind of posts that ask questions! makes me feel very involved, :)

oh oh, and sometimes i'll go to blogs and comment just to get my link (name) out there. i have very low readership on my own cozy little blog and if i make something awesome or write a good post i will go out into blogland and gab a bit to try to direct traffic back to me.
how do you all get people to read your blogs?

Diana said...

I try to reply to all comments, but I'm sure I miss a few here and there, especially when it's been a busy week and I don't get to my personal email for a day or two.

I usually read the comments on blog posts, but not always. Sometimes the discussion continues in the comments and it's always interesting to see what people are saying. I don't think I've ever gone back to a post to see if a reply to me was in the comments, never even thought about doing that.

I do lurk without commenting sometimes, especially on blogs that have a big readership, when it seems absurd to add my two cents. I don't think I have a rationale, I just comment when I think I have something to add.

Yes I try to respond to every one that has an email address with it. There have been a few days that I didn't but I'd say I'm at least 90%.

I have left comments on some that never respond back and that is kind of an empty feeling, kind of like they don't care what I have to say.

I do read the other comments before I leave mine. If 10 people have already said exactly what I was going to say sometimes I don't leave a comment, especially if it was an answer to a question in the blog.

I was rejected as a child and because of that I will go out of my way to let someone know I appreciate their comments.

floribunda... aka Julie said...

all of the above! I don't reply to every comment, but I try to hit most of them. If someone already has a bunch of comments I usually won't comment myself unless I feel I have something unique to add -- I don't usually do those "me too" comments. And -- I do often read the comments that others have left. Partly to see if I have anything new to add, and partly to see who's reading whose blogs and who I might be missing!

Interesting post!!

Do I reply to every comment? I try to. I'm sure I miss the odd one here and there, particularly if I'm inundated with work, but I try to acknowledge every comment.

There are some blogs on which I lurk, mostly some of the blogs which get tons of comments.

Commenting on blogs I read frequently is something I do try to do, although I'm nowhere near 100 per cent. It may depend on time constraints, subject matter, whether I'm feeling at all inspired and have something relatively intelligible to say.

I rarely read others comments unless it's a post like this one where the questions posed are intriguing and it's really interesting to see what others have said.

YankeeQuilter said...

Oh dear...this feels like a "me too" comment. I reply to almost all comments. I only leave comments about half the time on blogs I read...the pressure to be witty or say something new can be intimidating.

On my counter is a very beaten up Kitchen Aid...it was the first present from my husband. We went from jewelry to kitchen appliances very quickly!

Yes, replay to almost each one. If there are several that say simply, "Good job" or something very short, I may pass it but usually I thank them.

And yes, I DO read comments on other blogs.

If I visit an interesting blog, and there are a LOT of comments, I may not leave one. One reason is that each of our comments is posted for the WORLD to read if you do a Google Search -- kinda overkill!

hetty said...

I usually reply to all comments left on my blog if there is an email address. I also read what others have to say. And then I also click on the names of commenters to see their blogs. Sometimes I lurk. I only leave acomment if the post interests me.

I try to reply to every comment but I know I miss some when time gets stetched too thin. I seldom read others comments. I try to leave comments to let the blogger know I've been there. I know how much I appreciate a comment.

Great Post!! I want to DITTO what KarenDianne said. I'm not always good about leaving comments. It is unfortunate because through comments and further emails I have become friends with people I have never met in person.

Jody of Because I'm Me said...

I try to reply, but so often a comment won't have an e-mail address. Bummer.

Now that I use bloglines I don't leave a lot of comments. Keeping up is challenging enough these days! There are blogs I follow that I never have commented on.

I feel the same is true with my blog ... my readership is way higher than the number of comments I get (often zero ... but I can only blame myself for that lately since the number of posts is also equaling zero).

I reply to most comments on my blog. I sometimes read the comments on PW's blog if they have links. I have landed on some very interesting sites from her comment section.

You have some of the same thoughts and questions that I wonder about myself. I seldom read other people's comments, unless the blogger posed a question that I am interested in seeing how others responded. I have learned from my blogging buddies some interesting techniques this way. I do like to respond to people that leave me a comment, even if just to say thanks. But, like you, I don't received an enormous number of comments - but the ones I do get, seem to come for the same ladies and I feel that we have become friends of a sort. For a few posts I kept track of how many hits I had compared to the number of comments, and if I remember, it was about 15 comments out of 110 hits average. So, guess you can't use the comments as an indicator of people reading your blog.

I almost always respond to comments, although the no reply problem is increasing. I sometimes read comments, sometimes don't, depending on subject. And yes, I lurk. As someone put it, when the coolness factor is so great, I'm shy!

I try to respond to comments - sometimes I just can't keep up, though . . . there's dinner to get on the table and even a little dusting of furniture around the house *s*
I don't normally read the comments left by others on a blog. I don't want to be influenced on what I have to say - or worry that I'm repeating something already said.
I do lurk around many blogs. My reading list is long and if I didn't lurk occasionally, I'd never get anything done!

LOL...and look you just 25 comments!!!

I read randomly other comments on someone posts, mainly to be sure I don' duplicate comments.

I do reply to all comments that come into my inbox though.

I was wondering what was up with blogger, I had to reset my email showing today!

Wow...over 26,000 posts!!! How does a person sort through them? We bought KitchenAid mixer over 20 years ago. They haven't changed at all and mine still works like a champ. We did get $30 off the price of $250.00 (yup, even that long ago they had a huge price tag), anyway we got the discount because he had one green one, ugly green but brand new. He couldn't sell it simply due to the color. I don't know about anyone else but the discount meant more to me than having one that matched my kitchen. Okay, lets see, no I don't reply to evey comment...but yes I do read other peoples comments. I am interested in others thoughts, opinions and the occacional helpful tip.
Yes I lurk on lots of blogs. I have my favorites that I will comment on every time they post. The list isn't long but most of them are people that I can relate to in my day to day life. I just don't have time to comment on every blog I visit. Most of the new blogs I find are from links that my favorite blogs have posted on and said you need to visit this one...matter of fact I stopped over here from "Living Life at Lee Haven" and I'm so glad I did. I just started quilting about 18 months ago and didn't discover blogs until just about a year ago. I had heard people talk about the blogs they read but I just never checked into it. It is wonderland just waiting to be explored and occasionally I find myself spending more time reading blogs and sewing less so I picked a few that at I enjoyed the most (6 or 7,and that wasn't easy) and check them every single day, almost always comment but never by email unless they email me first. To me email is our personal space and if your not invited in, you shouldn't go in. (just my personal thoughts) Thanks for a great post, this was a wonderful topic and I really enjoyed reading everyones comments.

Well, I read all the comments on this post - they are very interesting. I do try to respond to comments but probably miss a few.

I don't comment on all blogs I read but try to comment on things of particular interest to me.

I don't comment on really big blogs with lots of comments unless I have a point to make that no one else has already commented on.

I really enjoy receiving comments so try to return the favor.

what an interesting thread you started here. i enjoyed reading the comments that people left you. i don't reply to all my comments as there is only so much time in a day. i do read and appreciate every one, though. i try to leave comments most of the places i visit, but i'm gradually tapering off on that, too. again, a time issue.

i had to reset my email address and i had a BUGGER of a time figuring it out. thankfully i was able to google it and someone had posted about how to fix it on their blog months ago.
